Laser Cutting

Laser cutting process utilizes laser energy to modify the shape or appearance of a material. It results in complete removal and separation of material from the top surface to the bottom surface along a designated path. Laser cutting can be performed on a single layer material or multi-layer material. When cutting multi-layer material, the laser beam can be precisely controlled to cut through the top layer without cutting through the other layers of the material.

This method of material modification provides numerous advantages to customers such as the ability to quickly change designs, produce products without the need for tooling, and improve quality of finished parts. The equipment eliminates expensive and time-consuming die costs and is ideal for low to medium production quantities where part geometries are complex, materials are fragile, or small shapes are too intricate for traditional die cutting.

Laser cutting process offers real time exibility and enhances the process of designing, developing and introducing new products. With a wide range of materials available for use, this technology is a viable option for almost any industry or environment.

Another advantage of laser material processing is compatibility with a multitude of materials. Compatible materials range from non-metals such as ceramics, composites, plastics/polymers and adhesives to metals including aluminum, iron, stainless steel and titanium.

Laser Cutting Study

Adchem Corporation and Universal Laser Systems completed a study on laser cutting various acrylic and rubber-based tape systems in double-sided, transfer adhesives and double-sided foam tape constructions. This laser cutting study will save design engineers significant product evaluation time and test expense by narrowing the field of psa tape candidates intended for laser cutting substrates. A detailed description of the laser cutting system, the methods and the results are provided in a downloadable document.

Utilizing the results from both Universal and Adchem databases enables users to rapidly evaluate tapes and substrates used in automotive, electronics, industrial device, gasketing, sealing, and cushioning applications.
